THE ADMISSION DOORS ARE WIDENING AT US MEDICAL SCHOOLS FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS

The doors to US medical schools for foreign students are widening. There is a good chance that if you are a foreign student and meet the necessary qualifications, you will be accepted at US medical schools across the country. The trend right now is that applications are down at medical schools. This perhaps makes it easier for students outside the US borders to receive acceptance letters to the prestigious US medical schools. Foreign students generally cherish the opportunity to study medicine at an American university if given the chance.

Foreign students have to go through the same admissions procedures as do other students. There are no exceptions. Most of these potential students have to have a B.S. degree in some field, have a solid G.P.A. and complete the MCAT. In addition foreign students will have to demonstrate a strong proficiency in English, and have completed the proper paper work with the US immigration services. They will have to have strong recommendation letters and have excellent communication skills. The process of admission to US medical schools for foreign students is no different than it is for US students.

The qualifications for admissions to medical school are no different for foreign students than US students. Many American medical schools are now looking for students with diversity. Being a foreign student would qualify as a strong diversity. The fact that a foreign students would bring in a different cultural background and most likely a different language would “score points” on the diversity chart. That would help to make them a better and stronger candidate for admissions. The fact is that US medical schools for foreign students are opening the doors to admission.

The one factor that may be a disadvantage for foreign students is the financial costs. Many public medical schools would charge tuition at a premium rate for foreign students. The cost of travel and housing would also be an additional burden for the foreign student. There would also be a period of adjustment for any foreign student not familiar with the American culture. This may prove difficult for many students without help or a mentor. Most universities would have a counseling office to help with these types of adjustments.

So the good news is that if you are a foreign student trying to gain admission to an American medical school your chances are good if you meet all the qualifications. The bad news is that you will be paying a higher rate of tuition than most US students. And it will take some time to adjust to the American culture. However, if you have the motivation and the qualifications this is a good time to apply for admissions to US medical schools. The opportunity is growing for US medical schools for foreign students.
